Emily, who will turn 13 in November, came to us about eight months ago and asked if we could take another "big trip" out west. It was four years ago this month that we hit the road for 52 days on a "Been there, done that" expedition across 21 states and Ontario.
After giving it some thought, we said, "Why not?" We realized that there wouldn't be too many more years when our kids would want or be able to spend quality time with us. We also knew that family time was the highest priority. Plus, after the winter we just had in Maryland, we figured we deserved a serious summer vacation!
We knew from the beginning that this wouldn't be a trip on the scale of the one in 2006. It would have to be shorter and less ambitious. After a few family pow-wows, we came up with a list of places we wanted to see and went about linking them together with Google Maps. The result was an itinerary that seemed reasonable for a month-long camping road trip.
The problem was that Sessy wasn't in a position to be away from her accounting practice for longer than three weeks. After some careful thought, we came up with a plan. Frank would tow our trusty Coleman pop-up trailer to Seattle and rendezvous with Sessy and kids who would fly out. We would then spend three weeks touring the Canadian Rockies and northern tier states.
The plan really came together when Frank's co-worker, Bob Scott, agreed to join Frank for the drive west.
We're due to set sail on June 15 (only 12 days--boy do we have a lot of work to do in a short time)!
